Election Day Letter of 2020

"Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. He rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” (Psalm 2:1-6)

On hearing election results, the phrase, "no news is good news" might take on a few different meanings. Depending on perspective, it might mean that "no news would be worse than hearing that 'my guy' lost"; "no reported news at all, regardless of who is elected, is 'good'"; or that "there is no such thing as news that is good". There is however, good news every day: "Jesus of Nazareth, a man who lived among you and in whom God certified divinity through mighty works and wonders and signs, was delivered up to die according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God." (Acts 2:23-24) You might say Christ was elected to it.

Whoever is elected in nations of the earth, it's news for sure, good to some and bad to others. Ultimately though, God is good to us in Jesus Christ everyday, in every way, and in all things. God is in control of the world events in His story, for His glory, and for our good. That's good news no matter what earth's election results are. To the outcome of the national election, say, "it is the Lord: let Him do what seems good to Him." (1 Samuel 3:18).

Election news produces temporary ups, downs, and circumstances. The Good News of Jesus Christ brings eternal joy and peace, calms fears of death, quiets a troubled mind, and stills a troubled conscience. There is nothing new about the news that the world, nations, communities, families, and individuals are shaken by election (and other) news. The Good News is that Christ's election as Savior is unshaken by world elections.
